This plug spawn is Hemlock Reishi (Ganoderma tsugae) mycelium growing on wooden white birch dowels. A close relative of the Japanese Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum or Lingzhi), which is renowned for its medicinal healing properties. Reishi can be made in to a pleasant tea, or used for tinctures and soups. Hemlock reishi can also be used to dye natural fabrics, like silks or wool.
Check out our Mushroom Tree Compatibility Chart to find the best wood variety for growing Hemlock Reishi mushrooms. For details on how to use your plug spawn to grow mushrooms on logs see our Mushroom Log Cultivation page. With all Ganoderma species, short inoculated logs can be placed vertically in plant pots and buried with sand and/or gravel. Another method is to bury the entire log horizontally and cover with sawdust, sand, and/or gravel. See our Log Burying Techniques page for more information.
